Projects

The "FutureEU: Empowering Youth through Climate Models" project is funded under the Erasmus+ KA2 small-scale partnership program and will be implemented in Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Slovenia by their respective United Nations Associations (UNAs).
The project’s primary goal is to empower young people from these three countries to engage with the European Union’s (EU) climate action agenda. It aims to equip participants with knowledge, leadership, and negotiation skills to tackle climate challenges while promoting equal opportunities by actively including young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
This will be achieved through the establishment of an EU Academy, where participants will learn about the EU and climate change, and the organization of three Model EU simulations—one in each participating country—allowing young people to apply their skills in a practical setting.

Together with students and teachers from UN clubs in 20 schools across 13 regions of the country, we have been implementing the project "Theater Against Bullying in School – TeST" for 18 months. The project's vision is a school free of bullying, providing a positive learning environment. The project's mission is to unite the potential, ideas, and efforts of UN student clubs from our national network to discuss, evaluate, and TeST good practices for combating violence and bullying in schools. The goal is to use theater and the arts as tools to help create a culture of acceptance, support, and mutual respect within the entire school community.
The project is implemented within the framework of the INSPIRE project: Improving National Support for Prevention, Intervention, and Response to Violence Against Children, and Empowering Victims. It is co-financed by the European Union and the 'Workshop for Civic Initiatives' Foundation (WCIF).

The project "Youth Climate Initiative" (2024) was managed by the UN Association of Bulgaria and financed by the Sofia municipality. The project targeted 6 schools in Sofia to enhance through educational and creative activities the students’ awareness and understanding of climate change. In the end, a simulation of COP 29 was organized with 60 participants.

The "Climate Heroes" (2023) project was funded by the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and implemented in collaboration with WWF-Bulgaria, WWF-Romania, WWF Adria-Serbia, the United Nations Association in Bulgaria, and the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation. It aimed to engage and empower young people aged 15 to 24 by raising awareness about the climate crisis and the impact of wasteful consumption at both local and global levels. Through the project, approximately 120 young participants from Central and Eastern Europe received training designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge to become climate leaders in their communities. The UNA of Bulgaria facilitated the process of finding and engaging youths in Bulgaria.

The "Youth Initiative 16x16" project is dedicated to the implementation of Goal 16 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16), which aims to build a peaceful, just, and inclusive society and to engage young people in achieving the sub-goals and indicators relevant to Bulgaria. Sixteen young people from Sofia took part in the initiative, and they: – Completed training on Goal 16 and its significance for Bulgaria; – Organized campaigns dedicated to Goal 16 in their communities (schools, universities); – Developed a concept and selected content for an exhibition consisting of eight informational panels, featuring interesting facts about specific indicators of Goal 16, related to both the world and Bulgaria. The exhibition was presented at the National Assembly, New Bulgarian University, and the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski."

Project "UN and Youth" is funded under the "European Solidarity Corps" program and is implemented in partnership with the "For You" Association in Varna, Bulgaria.

The European Solidarity Corps is a European Union initiative that provides young people with opportunities to engage in voluntary activities and support causes and initiatives in their home country or abroad..

As part of the "UN and Youth" project, the United Nations Association of Bulgaria trains and works with volunteers over the course of one year. The volunteers undergo an introductory training program and then actively participate in the organization's daily activities, including event planning and organization, managing communication channels, and engaging with partners. This structured form of volunteering aims to help young people develop key competencies that will support their successful integration into the labor market and society.

More information about the volunteers' activities and their work within the organization can be found on the social media pages of the United Nations Association of Bulgaria and on the following website: UNA News Bulgaria.

The project "Young Reporters for Peace" was implemented in 2022-2023 by UNA of Bulgaria in partnership with the Foundation “For New Partnerships in Journalism”, supported by the Active Citizens Fund Bulgaria. The aim of the project is to contribute to the promotion of peace journalism as a tool for enhancing democratic culture and civic awareness. A training program and educational materials were developed. Thirty young journalists were trained to work in a fact-sensitive environment.

The goal of the project was to provide a tool for monitoring Sofia's progress in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The focus is on Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, which aims to make cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, encompassing several sub-goals. As part of the project, a roundtable discussion with experts was held to select indicators suitable for monitoring progress in achieving the SDGs.

The project was implemented with the support of Bridge 47 and the European Union. Its aim was to develop the capacity of students and teachers to observe and assess the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in their school life. You can find the project materials here:

The project was funded by the Active Citizens Fund, a program of the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA FM) 2014–2021, funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, and implemented in partnership with the Foundation “For A New Partnerships in Journalism”. Through this project, we aim to connect local media and journalism, with schools and students from Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Karnobat, Montana, and Plovdiv. One of the tasks of the guide prepared for the project is to participate in the conversation about media literacy. Incorporating media literacy into school curricula and extracurricular activities encourages civic engagement, increases awareness of the power functions of popular media, and helps students acquire the necessary critical and research skills. Media literacy enables students to distinguish the inevitable risks of manipulation through the media and to resist the biases of journalists and their owners.

The project "Together Against Global Challenges" was implemented in 2017 by the UNA of Bulgaria in partnership with the Bacho Kiro Secondary School, Pavlikeni, with the help of the UN Club and the coordinator of this club. The target groups are students, teachers and parents. The aim of the project was to help reduce the risks of violation of children's rights and to stimulate the engagement of students with activities in their own neighborhood, school or community, also covered by the global Sustainable Development Goals. The project was made possible thanks to the "The Civic Initiatives Workshop Foundation“ under the "Rainbow" program 2015-2017, with the financial support of the "Velux" Foundation.

The project was implemented with the financial support of the Operational Programme "Human Resources Development", co-financed by the European Social Fund of the European Union, in partnership with 106th Secondary School "Grigoriy Tsamblak", Sofia, and Bacho Kiro High School, Pavlikeni. With this project, forty students who had dropped out of school were reintegrated into the classrooms.

The project, implemented in support of the "Sofia-European Capital of Sport 2018" initiative, included human rights training for students from five schools in Sofia. As part of the project, the publication "Peace Bag" was adapted into Bulgarian from the original "Peace Bag for EuroMed Youth", with contributions from the United Nations Association of Bulgaria. You can find the publication here

The project was implemented under the FAR Program "Civil Society Development 2002" with the aim of offering alternative approaches to working with children at risk of dropping out of school too early and losing any prospects for a more dignified and better life. The project implemented the "peer-to-peer education" method on children's rights, along with a mentoring program.
